They upgrade troops and replace lost troops. If they are losing too many troops in battle try upping their medicine skill. Otherwise they may always have "green" troops. Engineer: benefits exclusively from engineering to raise siege engine production and difficulty. Quartmaster: benefits exclusively from stewardship to raise party size. Surgeon: benefits exclusively from medicine to raise survival chance and and healing rate. The advanced roles have to deal with fiefdoms and clan managment in the later game but zcdZ.
