stick a tube of heat shrink around the part that frays most commonly, be generous with the length and sparse with the heat. Clean the cable first, too. I use 1/4” HST. I agree that Apple ones will last a "long" time if treated properly, but there are many third party alternatives that offer more durable cables. I have the USB-C to C cable (100w), USB PD 100w charger, USB-C to HDMI dongle, and USB-C to DisplayPort cable and they all work flawlessly! See the top post

Snowkids sells a 2 pack of 6foot usb c cables for $12 on Amazon. I got them off some crazy deal earlier this week for $7 and I have to say I am highly impressed so far. They are braided but very flexible. In my experience most durable long cables are very stiff and sometimes that turns into them breaking or fraying because they aren't flexible.
